Austin-based. John King has been a presence in Austin for almost 40 years. The character of the company is above reproach and we operate at the highest of moral and ethical standards. During our three decades in this industry, JKC has completed more than 500 projects but, even more importantly, we have over 80% repeat clients. John was only a year out of high school when he established John King Construction in 1978, but he always knew creating great relationships would be the key to making his company a success. Fast forward almost 40 years & 500+ projects later, John has gained the reputation of “The Customer’s Contractor”. John remains intimately involved in all facets of the project, no matter the size.  He often sets the direction of the project, is involved in pre-planning, and estimates to create a win-win situation. His extensive experience exhibited in his value engineering skills brings great value to the project’s cost.

Starting on the $1-a-bag site cleanup crew at age 12, JD has grown up in and around the commercial construction industry and knew from an early age that construction was his passion. JD attended Texas State University from 2009-2011 before transferring to Howard Payne where he was captain of the football team and graduated with a business management degree in 2013.  He has worked as a project superintendent for John King Construction ever since.

Within that time, JD has successfully completed seven projects with a constructed value of approximately $10 million, including the Bastrop Southside Market & Barbeque and the new City of Round Rock Rabb House Rental Facility.  John King Construction received letters of appreciation from both the restaurant’s CEO/Owner and the City of Round Rock’s Building Construction Manager for JKC’s outstanding performance on these projects.

JD has proven he can deliver a broad range of projects within schedule and budget.  He has accomplished this due to a good working plan knowledge and strong communication skills.  JD has developed great working relationships with all of his sub-contractors, architect-engineer design teams, and most importantly, our clients. JD is currently working in our Estimating & Project Management Department where he is putting all his experience to work.

RANDY HOLYBEE
Project Superintendent

With 46 years of experience constructing convenience stores and installing fueling systems throughout central Texas, John King Construction was thrilled when Randy joined the JKC team in 2012 as lead project superintendent for the convenient store and fueling station markets. As owner of FuelTex, Randy worked with John King as a team subcontractor over a 42-year period; designing, procuring and installing fuel systems for fueling stations.

With Randy’s extensive experience installing above and below ground fuel storage tanks, including a $3.5 million fuel storage farm in Houston, Texas, Randy understands the significance of safely installing environmentally sustainable fueling systems. He knows how important the layout of the fuel system and the spacing of fuel dispensing is for customer-friendly operations.

More recently, Randy has transitioned into our leading fast track superintendent for quick service restaurants. John King Construction is pleased to be able to provide our clients with project superintendents like Randy who have both the experience and knowledge to make clients’ projects a success.

JOHN KARFIT
Project Superintendent

John first worked for John King from 1986-1993 as a superintendent, project manager and cost estimator.  He was John King’s second fulltime superintendent and is excited to be back with JKC.

John has almost forty years in the construction industry with 30 years as a field supervisor.  He has extensive experience constructing petroleum industrial, ‘big box’ retail facilities, and fueling stations for the military and private sector with scopes including service stations.  John set three national records for delivery of Exxon service stations.

His construction portfolio includes:

  • 18 ‘big box’ standalone retail facilities for major grocery chains. [Publix, Kroger, Food Lion, Trader Joe’s, and Harris Teeter],
  • 16 shopping centers with one of these major grocery chain stores as an anchor store,
  • two CVS drug stores,
  • a dental office, and
  • warehouse and storage facilities.

John was one of only five superintendents for the construction of an 875,000 SF Unified Textile Plant.  He is a project superintendent with a focus on safety and quality whom our clients can trust to make their projects a success. John King Construction shares in the excitement of having John Karfit as part of our team once again.

MIKE RUSSELL
Project Superintendent

Mike Russel has been a project superintendent with John King Construction since 2014. He has a wealth of knowledge coming up through the trades as a carpenter, iron and steel worker, welder, roofer and concrete foreman.  This diverse hands-on experience in the construction industry over the past thirty years has helped Mike develop strong people skills. There are times when the owner, architect-engineer and subcontractors do not always have the same goals and expectations. Because Mike understands their different perspectives, he is able to listen to their concerns and resolve such conflicts.

Mike has experience with the various procurement processes, including competitive bid, negotiated contracts, and design-build. He also has approximately seven years of construction management at risk experience on challenging higher education projects.

Whether new construction, a renovation project, and/or Green and LEED projects, Mike has the expertise to make clients’ projects a success.

KATIE KING
Marketing Director

Katie grew up visiting construction sites with her dad and could always put a positive spin on any situation.  A favorite memory of her dad’s is from when Katie was 7 years old and he took her along to inspect a new asphalt parking lot after a rain. After expressing his frustration about water not draining, Katie responded with “but daddy, it’s good for the birds to be able to drink!” It certainly wasn’t meant to be the foundation for a bird fountain, but it may have been the cornerstone leading to a great marketing career…

Katie attended Abilene Christian University where she was the Social Director  of her social club and graduated in 2010 with a Business Administration degree majoring in Management and Marketing.  Prior to joining John King Construction in 2014, Katie was in sales and finance with Fiat of Austin.  During her time with Fiat of Austin, Katie was named #1 in the nation for car sales and the dealership was recognized as #1 in the nation.  She also started a service online brand company which is successfully operating today.

As Marketing Director, Katie is actively engaged in the greater Austin area; expanding the company’s sales and client base. Being raised in and around the commercial construction industry has given Katie the knowledge required to understand what potential clients are looking for. Katie confidently conveys John King Construction’s focus on meeting or exceeding customer expectations and delivering quality facilities safely and on-time.

Who better to market the company than someone who truly exemplifies the JKC values and work ethic; who shares a personal connection and understanding of the foundation John King Construction has been built upon? Katie is committed to excellence and is an exceptional ambassador for the company.

CYNTHIA HEMPEL
Accounting

Cynthia graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Stout in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration majoring in Accounting. Cynthia continued to enhance her accounting knowledge through advanced accounting courses from Austin Community College.

Prior to joining John King Construction in 2001, Cynthia’s responsibilities for other Austin/Pflugerville companies included, Controller for Centex Beverage, Inc., Accountant for Women’s Fence & Guardrail, Inc., and Accounting Supervisor for Stokes Imaging Services, Inc. In addition to her accounting responsibilities at Centex Beverage, Cynthia served as the system administrator responsible for maintaining and upgrading all computer hardware and software as well as system restoration in the event of system failures.

Cynthia’s professional demeanor and accounting expertise make her an invaluable member of the JKC office and project teams. She is responsible for many cost accounting functions and works as a check and balance system to make sure job costs are being distributed accurately. John King has always called Cynthia a “work horse” as she has an incredible work ethic.

SHANNON CHAPA
Project Administrator

Prior to joining the JKC team, Shannon provided administrative support for an electrical contractor as well as K & N Management. During her tenure at K & N Management, Shannon was involved in creating and successfully implementing numerous streamlined processes. Her contributions to the team assisted in the winning of the prestigious and nationally recognized Malcom Baldridge Award for 2010. In addition to her seven years of administrative expertise, Shannon works extremely well under pressure, pays attention to details, and is highly versatile in the work place.

As our Project Administrator, Shannon generates and manages all subcontracts. She assists JKC’s project managers and project superintendents with their day-to-day operations. Just a few of the many tasks include: distribution of documents, data entry, management of the subcontractor insurance log, recording meeting minutes, and assisting in the maintenance of as-builts and job coding.

Shannon’s support is critical to project management documentation.  She is a tremendous asset to John King Construction.
